Exploring disability issues using drama.

The idea of creating a drama group began as a dream in December 2010 by two people with a vision. Whilst working as advocates they could see that their dream could be turned into a reality, In April 2011, along with five other committed people with a passion for drama and a strong desire to explore learning disability issues using the arts, Leading Players was born.

We continue to grow from strength to strength, embarking on a variety of new and exciting projects each year. This year we celebrate our 5th birthday and have a membership of 19. In 2015 we became a Registered Charity.

A Steering Committee of 5 members and the group facilitator plan the running of the group by discussing ideas and making decisions about everything that we do. Everyone has their say. We have an Annual Review each January and form a new action plan for the year ahead. A folder of evidence is kept which records our achievements. We encourage and support each other to express ourselves and are always looking for new and creative opportunities.

Dawn Teagles is the group facilitator. She is a Trustee, secretary, drama teacher and unpaid volunteer. During the weekly workshops she is supported by 4 unpaid, volunteer helpers.

We are governed by 4 Trustees who oversee the running of the group and report to the Charity Commission.

  • Cinderella on Tour to Day Services and Special Schools
  • Opening B.I.L.D Annual Conference
  • ‘The Games of Olympus’ – To celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games, performed at numerous community venues.
  • 2nd place in Nuneaton Carnival

2013

  • Communication Breakdown to launch our Website at BBC Coventry & Warwickshire.
  • 1st place in Nuneaton Carnival + best overall float.
  • ‘Disaster Chef’ for Nuneaton & Bedworth Leisure Trust

2014

  • ‘Perils of Pauline’ – filming project + Film Premier.
  • Performing for GettaLife at their Planning Day, Coventry.
  • ‘Who are these Men?’ – WW1 tribute performed in the community.
  • 2nd place in Nuneaton Carnival
  • ‘Over by Christmas’ – a joint production with Atherstone Dramatic Society & Atherstone Theatre Workshop.

2015

  • ‘Aiming High’ Filming Project commenced
  • ‘All Aboard for Murder’, murder mystery.

  • We give presentations about Leading Players to groups and organisations
  • We sell poppies for the Atherstone Poppy Appeal in November.
  • We go on an annual trip to the Birmingham Hippodrome to see shows.
  • We go on outings; last year we went on the Coronation Street Tour in Manchester.
  • We all take part in an annual sponsored walk to raise funds.
  • We hire professional actors as sessional workers occasionally to learn new skills.
  • We take part in musical workshops and Tai Chi sessions.
  • We have our own Website and Facebook page.
